Invest Myanmar Summit 2019

               On 31 August 2018, the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) held a press conference on the “Invest Myanmar Summit 2019,” which will be held during 28 – 29 January 2019 at the MICC-II in Nay Pyi Taw. The summit is part of UMFCCI’s activities to attract more foreign investment in Myanmar with the support of the Government. U Phyo Wai, Vice President of UMFCCI gave a presentation on the main objectives of the seminar, which are three-fold. Firstly, to provide international and local investors with the opportunity to discover Myanmar’s business potential. Secondly, to serve as a platform to meet with the Central and Regional Government officials, as well as for local governments to showcase business opportunities in their regions. Thirdly, to expand investment beyond Yangon and Mandalay, to include Shan State, Ayeyarwady Region, Kayin State, Mon State, and Tanintharyi Region.

                  The seminar will be held on two consecutive days with the participation of high level representatives from the Union government, regional governments, international investment funds, international organizations, and local and foreign business leaders,to promote and attract more investment in Myanmar.

                  On the first day, there will be a high-level panel discussion in the morning and afternoon, with presentations on different regions and industries in Myanmar as parallel sessions.

                  On the second day, there will also be presentations on various industries as parallel sessions, followed by a closing session with high-level representatives from the Myanmar Investment Commission, as well as high-level representatives from China, Japan, and Singapore international enterprise.

                  UMFCCI expects over 800 people to participate in the Invest Myanmar Summit 2019, comprising investors, business owners, and representatives from regional governments and industries from key states in Myanmar. UMFCCI is targeting eight industries, which includes manufacturing, garments, power generation and distribution, food processing and fisheries, tourism, education, healthcare, and property. This is due to their high impact on economic development, such as job creation and improvement of livelihoods.

                  The relevant economic Ministers from the Union Government and Regional Governments for the said targeted industries will participate in the Invest Myanmar Summit 2019 to discuss investment opportunities with investors. At the same time, investors are also invited to raise issues and difficulties in investing in Myanmar. They will need to register in advance for a one hour discussion slot with the relevant Ministers.

                  UMFCCI will send all the related information and registration details in early September. Registration for Invest Myanmar Summit 2019 will open on 1 October 2018 and includes a registration fee. In the meantime, UMFCCI will do a roadshow on Investment Myanmar Summit 2019 from the end of September to mid-October 2018 in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan. They will meet with their counterparts in the said countries and also visit some border areas in China and Thailand to survey trade and investment opportunities. In closing, U Phyo Wai asked the Embassies and foreign chambers in Myanmar for their support in circulating information on the Invest Myanmar Summit 2019 and roadshow.
