National Export Strategy (NES) 2020- 2025 will focus on developing its export volume and digital economy

The Ministry of Commerce said that it will focus on developing its export sectors and digital economy in its National Export Strategy (NES) 2020-2025.

“The Myanmar Trade and Investment Plan will support sustainable development of exports in the next five years. Both the union government and regional/state governments need to make sure to improve trade and investments for development of export and a digital economy by getting recommendations from the Stakeholder’s Symposium,” said Dr. Than Myint, Union Minister of the Ministry of Commerce.

The National Export Strategy (NES) 2015-2019 was adopted by the Ministry of Commerce with the help of DFID’s funding and ITC’s technical assistance.

“NES 2015-2019 is over now. This was our first five-year plan, and we intend to go on to a second five-year plan. We managed to accomplish some things, yet there are other things left to do. We need to work more effectively and systematically in this second five-year plan. The Ministry of Commerce has the goal of tripling its export volume. However, even if the actual export volume does not triple, it needs to double. So, if you want to increase export, you need to be selective and choose the items with strong potential,” said U Ye Min Aung, President of Myanmar Rice Federation.

The government and stakeholders chose information, transportation, capital and upgrading the quality of goods as driving factors to focus on for increasing export.

In accordance with requests from private businessmen, the government chose five new priority sectors: fruits, vegetable and flowers, finished precious stones, handicrafts, value-added agricultural products and digital economy.
