 Myanmar attracted most of its FDI in service sector for the first five months of the current fiscal year, followed by manufacturing sector and construction sector

          As of end of February 2022, Myanmar attracted a total of USD 530.775 million in foreign direct investment. The services sector was the highest recipient of FDI inflow at USD 206.064 million. This was followed by manufacturing sector which garnered USD 138.637 million, construction sector at USD 65 million, transportation and communications sector at USD 45.6 million, hotels and tourism sector at USD 30.497 million, energy sector at USD 20.584 million, livestock and fisheries sector at USD 19.350, and agricultural sector at slightly more than USD 5.043 million, respectively.

          In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, Myanmar’s electricity sector received the largest share of FDI inflow to the tune of USD 3,121 million, followed by industry sector with over USD 286 million, transportation and communications sector with over USD 133 million, according to the Myanmar Investment Commission. The data collected by DICA indicates that, in the 2020-2021 financial year, a total of 48 FDI projects have been applied for investment promotion under the Myanmar Investment Law, Of these, 22 projects were granted a permission while 26 projects received endorsements, bringing the capital inflow of USD 3,791.398 million into the country. Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) permitted 22 FDI projects and endorsed 4 investment project proposals. Meanwhile, other State/Region Investment Committees across the country approved 22 investment projects. This helped create 23,956 job opportunities for local workers.

          Sectors such as services, hotels and tourism, industrial zone construction, livestock and fisheries, agriculture, and real estate (housing) in Myanmar also received inbound direct investments from foreign countries, which calculates to around USD 3,893.461 million in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
