Local vehicle manufacturer Myanmar Motor Corporation  (MMC) will begin the production of buses for both domestic and international markets, after the Yangon based company was given the nod by the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC).

MMC has set aside $10 million for the operation which covers upgrades to its Mingaladon assembly facility and production costs.  Initially, the company plans to produce two types of bus-a 49 seater and a 55 seater for city and highway use.

“Our capacity is 30 cars per month,” Htay Aung, President of MMC, told financial publication Deal Street Asia.

The company aims to produce 100 buses annually, going up to 200 per year within nine years and hopes that demand from countries in the Asia-Pacific region can drive exports.

“We are aiming for the export market. Corporations like SMRT in Singapore usually change 100 to 200 buses every year. We want to fill in that space,” said Htay Aung.

The company is also looking to export its buses to companies in Macao, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

MMC was established in 2012 in association with 31 companies and focuses on a system of vehicle assembly known as CKD and SKD, where by vehicle parts kits are imported and assembled locally.

MMC is also Myanmar's only dealer of German made MAN trucks and buses.
