A special project to revive Yangon Region’s fishing industry will be introduced in Twante Township after monsoon season, Yangon’s Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein said at a UMFCCI meeting on July 20.
Twante Township is home to Yangon Region’s top fish breeders and is located less than 50 kilometers from Yangon industrial ports.
“Developing Yangon Region’s fishing industry has great urgency because of its potential for boosting GDP and local job growth,” U Phyo Min Thein, said.
Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF) will work closely with local fish breeders to maximize production, offer technological innovations, and address chronic industry problems.
The special project will extend fish breeding plots to previously uncultivated or restricted land. It will also establish committees to resolve long standing fish farm land disputes, some of which have stagnated economic growth for years, Yangon’s Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, said.
A primary aim of the project is to make Myanmar’s fishing industry more competitive on the international stage and eventually, carve out a niche in global fish markets similar to its ASEAN neighbors.
One committee, jointly founded by Myanmar and Czech Republic governments and chaired by U Kyaw Win, Minister for Planning and Finance, will work to provide improvements and higher standards to Myanmar’s agriculture and fishery industries for export to the European marketplace.
There are 450,000 acres of fish breeding farms in Myanmar, according to statistics of Myanmar Fisheries Federation.
