The construction process on the section of road between the border of Thailand and the Dawei Special Economic Zone (DSEZ) is expected to start by mid-2020, according to Dr. Myint San, Deputy Chairman of the special economic zone management committee.

“We estimate starting the construction process in mid-2020. The Ministry of Construction will take responsibility for the road construction on our side of the border, while the Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA) will take responsibility for construction on the extensive road system on Thailand’s side. This is where the project stands,” he said during an interview with state-run newspaper.

The 138 kilometer (85.75 mile) long two-lane road will be located in Tanintharyi Region and connect the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Dawei, Myanmar to Htee Khee, Myanmar on the Myanmar-Thai border. This location is near Kanchanaburi, Thailand, and is also known in Thailand as the Ban Phu Nam Ron Border Crossing.

In March 2018, Pyidaungsu Hluttaw — the country’s highest legislature — also approved a proposal to borrow   4.5 billion (baht) from Thailand.

“NEDA is conducting a ground survey for feasibility and safety of the road. The ground survey will complete by the end of September,” he added.

The two governments will sign an agreement on the loan when the ground survey results come out. The tender process for selecting the construction company to build the road will start after the agreement is signed.

The Dawei road project will connect Myanmar to the larger Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) in Southeast Asia. This vital passageway links Cambodia with six provinces in Thailand including Bangkok, four regions in Vietnam including Ho Chi Minh City, and six provinces in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).

Dawei SEZ

The planned Dawei Special Economic Zone (DSEZ) mega project will include building a deep-sea port, an oil refinery, a steel mill, fertilizer and petrochemical plants, industrial factories and operations, a reservoir, and the road connecting Dawei to Kanjanaburi, Thailand.

The 196 square kilometer (121.78 square mile) wide Dawei Special Economic Zone project will include a 27 square kilometer wide initial project, and expand into the main project at 169 square kilometers.

The DSEZ, which will be implemented by the governments of Myanmar, Thailand, and Japan as well as private sector players.
