The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) will solicit tenders for the overhaul of Yangon’s flooding and natural disaster infrastructure with the help of a World Bank loan and international guidelines.
The World Bank created the Myanmar Southeast Asia Disaster Risk Management Project (DRMP) as a solution to the havoc monsoon’s yearly flooding and inundation wreaks on Yangon’s urban areas, according to Dr. Tin Tun Oo, Deputy Official of Engineer Department of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC).
“All the details of the tender applications have to meet with World Bank guidelines,” U Tin Tun Oo, said. The guidelines place strict international standards on the tenders and a special emphasis on environmental impact and local job creation.
“Disaster risk management is critical to reducing poverty. When food prices peak due to natural disasters and assets are lost, the poor and vulnerable feel the most pressure,” Abdoulaye Seck, the World Bank Country Manager for Myanmar, said.
World Bank is presenting Myanmar with a $125 million loan to strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to natural disasters, $100 million of which will be allocated directly to managing Yangon’s flood risk by improving infrastructure, preparation, and reactionary programs.
Separate tenders will be solicited to local and international companies for renovating the drainage system, constructing water collection ponds, and building flood protection systems.
“Yangon faces high flood risk and is located in an earthquake-prone area. The project investments in the city’s drainage system, public facilities, and critical infrastructure will help achieve our aim of delivering high quality public infrastructure and services in the city,” said Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein
Yangon Regional Government and Word Bank will formally sign the loan agreement after approval from Pyidaungsu Hluttaw.
