Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) has organized nine private sector task forces to take part in the government’s Union Enterprises for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development (UEHRD).
As the second poorest state in Myanmar, Rakhine state has been facing many challenges and difficulties with the ongoing conflict between Rakhine Buddhists and Bengali Muslims, this is one of the barriers leading to a developed state.
The government is attempting to stabilize the conflicts and find solutions to negotiate the tension between two groups. The state needs assistance from international organizations and local organizations including participation from business leaders.
Dr. Aung Tun Thet, Chief Coordinator of UEHRD, met with businessmen and representatives from UMCCI’s affiliated association at UMFCCI office on October 21st and formed the nine private sector task forces.
UMFCCI has chosen nine sectors that will help UEHRD in organizing the nine task forces that involve related businessmen and representatives from various organizations.
The nine task forces are as follows: Construction and infrastructure; Agriculture and livestock; Development of industrial zones; Information and public relations; Job creation and vocational training; Healthcare; Microfinance; Fund raising; and Tourism promotion.
These task forces are initially organized considering the urgent and necessary tasks for politics, and social development of Rakhine State, where private sectors can take part in UEHRD.
UEHRD will focus on three main things: effective provision of proper repatriation of refugees from Myanmar, relief and resettlement, and sustainable development of the region that is free from conflicts.
The task forces will immediately carry out resettlement and provide humanitarian aid to those in Rakhine State. In addition, they will work to develop a short term and long-term scheme for business, trade, investment, and job creation in Rakhine State.
Members of the task forces, UMFCCI and its affiliated associations will pay a visit to Rakhine State on the last week of October to initially find out what is needed.
‘‘We must prove that private sector enterprises can develop Rakhine State despite these difficulties. We will invite all the businessmen and people across the country using all platforms such as social networks, websites, internet, and mobile applications,’’ Dr. Aung Tun Thet said.
