Ambassador updates Thai Business Community on Myanmar’s Political Developments
On 23 May 2016, the Thai Business Association of Myanmar (TBAM) organized the second “Myanmar Update” seminar for the Thai business communityat the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon. The seminar included speeches by Ambassador Pisanu Suvanajata on Myanmar’s political and economic outlook under President U Htin Kyaw, an update on taxes by Mr. Wirat Sirikajornkij from KPMG Thailand and KPMG Advisory (Myanmar), an update on labour laws by Mr. Pakpoom Vetvitayanuwat from the law firm LS Horizon (Myanmar), and an update on Myanmar laws in 2015-2016 by Ms. Yuwadee Thean-ngarm from the law firm Tilleke & Gibbins (Myanmar). The seminar was well attended by 120 Thai business people and included an informative Q&A session after all the presentations. -

In Southeast Asia, water resources are under strain due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. The situation is made worse by water-related disasters, climate change and lack of governance in the region. Water resource issues include inadequate drinking-water supply and sanitation facilities, water pollution, floods, the siltation of river systems, and the management of rivers and large dams present special management challenges. Barriers to addressing these issues include poverty, illiteracy, rapid population growth, and ineffective institutions and policies for developing, distributing, pricing, and conserving water resources. The complex patterns of these issues are shaped by differences in wealth, environment, and political systems. -
Thailand organizes a briefing on the Dawei SEZ for the NLD Economic Committee
On 17 May 2016, the Royal Thai Embassy, Yangon, organized a briefing on the Dawei Special Economic Zone (DSEZ) for the National League for Democracy (NLD) Economic Committee and representatives from the Chief Minister of Tanintharyi Region’s Office, where the project is located. The briefing took place at the Embassy, with Dr. Porametee Vimolsiri, Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand, Mr. Singtong Lapisatepun, Director-General, Department of East Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, and representatives from the consulting firm Roland Berger, providing information and responding to questions on the project. The briefing sought to provide information to the NLD Economic Committee and related government officials, and to promote understanding on the DSEZ project, with a view to strengthen collaboration in driving the project forward under the new NLD-led government.
