The 2014 edition brought together close to 250 decision makers from 16 different countries with the common goal of understanding what opportunities Myanmar has to offer. We had the honour of having H.E. U Set Aung, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar and Dr. Maung Aung, Advisor to the Union Minister for Commerce grace the event as guests-of-honour and keynote speakers.
Martin Luther King Junior’s famous quote of “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward” was used by H.E. U Set Aung to set the tone of what needs to be done in the Myanmar banking sector in his opening address. This same quote resonated throughout the 2 days as speakers elaborated on what needs to be done, going forward.
The recent awarding of banking licenses to the 9 foreign banks marked a significant milestone in the history of Myanmar’s banking. Banks which were not granted the coveted license continued to show interest in this final frontier market as more foreign banks from Asian countries like Sri Lanka and Taiwan received new licenses to operate representative offices in Yangon since Oct 2014. Domestically, new local banks are being set up to facilitate development in various sectors like housing construction and tourism.
With plenty going on, the local banks will have to continually be kept up to speed. For 2015, we have lined up a series of training clinics designed to address the prevalent challenges the local bankers are facing, both in the product and technology categories. We hereby extend a warm welcome for you to join us once again in Yangon, from 27-28 July 2015 at the Myanmar Banking Conference 2015 – the mainstay event in Myanmar’s banking landscape. See you there!
