Thailand and Myanmar start out the Initial Phase Development of Dawei SEZ and reaffirm commitment to make progress on the project

Thailand and Myanmar start out the Initial Phase Development of Dawei SEZ and reaffirm commitment to make progress on the project.

On the 5 August 2015, H.E. M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, and H.E. U Nyan Tun,Vice President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar co-chaired the 4th Myanmar-Thailand Joint High-level Committee Meeting regarding the Dawei Special Economic Zone (Dawei SEZ) in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. Thailand and Myanmar reaffirmed the commitment by expressing their strong intent to make progress on both the Initial Phase Development and the long-term master plan.

In this occasion, the Initial Phase Development concession agreements between the Dawei SEZ Management Committee and a consortium of developers, including Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, Rojana Industrial Park Public Company Limited and LNG Plus International Company Limited was signed.  The Initial Phase Development consists of an industrial estate, power plants, an initial township, a small port, a water reservoir, a two-lane road to Thailand, a telecom landline and LNG terminal.  

His Excellency U Nyan Tun noted that "The Initial Phase Development will create approximately 300,000 jobs for local people by 2025, bring in foreign investments and technologies, and lead to much-needed infrastructure ample opportunities for local companies."

His Excellency M.R. Pridiyathorn Devakula stated that "the Dawei SEZ project has a strong linkage and immense impact to the greater region's overall economic and social development".
