Ambassador-designate attended “Rakhine Investment Fair 2019” and joined the economic surveying trip in Rakhine State

On 21-22 February 2019, H.E. Mrs. Suphatra Srimaitreephithak, Ambassador-designate of Thailand, together with delegation from Thai Business Association in Myanmar (TBAM) attended the “Rakhine Investment Fair 2019” at Jasmine Ngapali Resort Hotel, Thandwe Township, Rakhine State.

The opening ceremony on 22 February 2019 was presided over by H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of Myanmar who also gave a keynote speech. The Investment Fair in Rakhine State was the first of its kind with the objectives to promote and create opportunities for economic development in the area as well as displaying the economic potentials of Rakhine state to foreign investors including business-matching between foreign and local investors.

Furthermore, the Ambassador-designate also witnessed the signing of the MOU between Institute of Business Economics Research and Development (IBERD) Foundation of Thailand and Rakhine State Government regarding sustainable development projects in Rakhine State in many sectors which can be further expanded into joint ventures with Thai private sectors concerned such as fisheries, shrimp farming, cold storage and warehouse business and renewable energy.

On the same occasion, H.E. Mrs. Srimaitreephithak and the Thai delegation had meetings with
(a) H.E. U Thaung Tun, Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations of Myanmar, Prof. Dr. Aung Tun Thet, Chief Coordinator of Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development in Rakhine (UEHRD), and (b) U Nyi Pu, Chief Minister of Rakhine State, together with Rakhine Minister of Planning and Finance.

Subsequently, on 23-24 February 2019, Ambassador-designate led the delegation on a business trip in Rakhine State under the Embassy’s economic surveying project. The trip included surveying and exploring economic potentials in the prioritized area. In Kyaukpyu, the delegation had an opportunity to attend a briefing regarding the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone and surveyed the Kyaukpyu deep sea port located in an island along the coastal area. Furthermore, the delegation also travelled to Sittwe, the capital of Rakhine State to explore market and business channels.
