Myanmar's fish product is not enough to meet the foreign demand: Chairman of Myanmar Fisheries Products Exporters Association

There are not enough fishery products in the country even though there is demand from abroad, U Tun Aye, chairman of Myanmar Fisheries Products Exporters Association, said.

He was speaking at a meeting of Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF).

“Japan is ready to buy as many Myanmar fishery products as possible. But the fishes are not available. International standard fish freezing factories are ready to produce 30 to 40 tonnes per day, but these factories can only produce one to two tonnes per day now.”

Dr Thet Hmu, chairman of the Myanmar Aqua Feed Association, said that the price of food is increasing as raw materials become rare.

U Soe Win, president of MFF, said, “Myanmar is a country with plenty of natural resources. If we depend on other countries to get fish, we can say that Myanmar fish production has been regressed. We need to cooperate to find out the exact solutions of the issue.”

According to the statistics of Myanmar Fisheries Federation, the exports of fisheries products has been decreasing continuously. The import value was $600 million in fiscal year 2013-14, but MFF predicts the value to be barely $400 million in 2015-16.
