Thai investors eye in making comprehensive tourism investment in Tanintharyi Region

Thai investors have shown interest in making comprehensive tourism investment in Kawthaung and Myeik archipelago, Tanintharyi Region, according to U Thant Sin Lwin, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration (DICA).
“There are email inquiries asking how many islands and roads are in the archipelago,” said the official. “They also want to know what types of plane can land there, what businesses should be implemented there, and if there is a hospital.”
Investors are interested in providing sightseeing flights over the archipelago and plan to visit Myanmar to talk about investment potential. In the first week of December, they sent further inquiries.
“The investors want to pursue comprehensive tourism development including speed boats, planes and yachts. This will be a mega project,” said U Thant Sin Lwin.
DICA is working with other government departments to provide complete and helpful information for prospective investors.
Myeik archipelago’s natural beauty has attracted interest not only from local and foreign visitors but also from investors seeking to develop nature-based tourism.
The Tanintharyi Regional Government has adopted 10 priority reforms, to which tourism development has been added, and aims to develop various projects including resorts, parks and zoos. It also has plans for nature tourism zones in Kawthaung, Dawei, Laung Lone and Myeik districts and Kyunsu Township and to provide capital and technological assistance to local SMEs.
With an area of 43,329 square kilometers, the region has over 800 kilometers of coastline and more than 800 islands.
In the first 10 months of 2019, Myanmar received over 3.5 million tourists, a 24 percent increase over the same period last year. Tanintharyi is one of the most visited regions and hopes to welcome 300,000 tourists annually.
