Thailand-Myanmar border trade climbs to $1.3 bln in current fiscal

The value of border trade between Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand was registered at US$1.314 billion as of 7 February in the current financial year compared with $1.28 billion in the corresponding period of the previous FY, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce.
Between 1 October, 2019 and 7 February, 2020, Myanmar’s exports to Thailand were pegged at $906.16 million, while imports were estimated at $408.229 million.
Of the seven border trade points between Myanmar and Thailand, Myeik and Hteekhee gates witnessed a decline in trade in the 2019-2020 financial year.
Last year, the Hteekhee gate saw the largest trade among the Myanmar-Thailand checkpoints. This year, trade at the gate dropped by over $100 million.
The value of trade stood at $44.879 million at Tachilek, $390 million at Myawady, $131.8 million at Kawthoung, $68 million at Myeik, $668.64 million at Hteekhee, $9.27 million at Mawtaung, and $1.64 million at Maese.
Myanmar primarily exports fishery products such as crab, fish, and shrimp, as well as onions, sesame, dry tea leaves, coconut, and turmeric to Thailand. It imports capital goods such as machinery, raw industrial goods such as cement and fertilizers, consumer goods such as cosmetics, and food products from the neighboring country. —GNLM
