Yangon Chief Minister urged environmentally friendly and responsible investments in Yangon Region

Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein called for environmentally-friendly and responsible investments into the region during remarks at the February 6 ‘Green Economy Green Growth’ seminar at UMFCCI.
“We have carried out mangrove forest restoration initiatives in Yangon Region by planting around 30,000 acres of mangrove trees as we want to fence the Mottama coastal area with mangrove forest,” said the Chief Minister. “This will help prevent natural disaster and climate change not only for people in Yangon but also for the whole country.”
“Furthermore,” he continued, “we are also focusing on smokeless industries while making sure to mitigate the consequences of smokestack industries.”
As Yangon is a major economic hub, its development is relevant for the country’s development, he added.
The Yangon Regional Investment Committee has approved 71 foreign investment proposals and four local investment proposals, securing $130.282 million in foreign investment and K6.315 billion in local investment.
“The World is facing natural disasters because of environmental damages. Therefore, when working on economic development, we need to preserve the environment and collectively collaborate for sustainable development,” said Dr. Myo Thant, vice president of UMFCCI.
He also called for prevention of deforestation and bamboo cover losses due to infrastructure and urban development.
The Yangon Regional Government plans to organize an investment forum this year, following similar events hosted by various regional and state governments to showcase investment opportunities in their areas. It is also carrying out development projects in pursuit of four goals: To preserve Yangon’s historic heritage sites; go green; build a livable city; and serve as an economic hub for the country.
