The water treatment plant to be implemented in Hlegu Township with USD $ 180 million loans from ADB Bank

A water treatment plant will be built in Hlegu Township, Yangon, using $180 million budget borrowed from ADB Bank, according to U Maung Maung Win, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Planning, Finance, and Industry.

“This project is for water resources and will be implemented in five years starting from December this year,” the deputy minister said.

ADB Bank will provide the loan with an eight-year grace period with a one percent annual interest rate and 24 years of repayment with a 1.5 percent annual interest rate.

Yangon supplies water to residents from reservoirs including Hlawgar, Phuugyi, Ngamore Yeik, and Gyo Phyu. Aiming to increase water supply to 90 percent of city residents by 2025, the Yangon City Development Committee is implementing a number of projects besides Lagonpyin.

The Kokko Myitwa River water treatment and supply project will supply water to 16 townships in Yangon starting in 2025.

At present, Yangon, a city of over 5.2 million people, provides over 200 million gallons of water per day to its residents, and water consumption is estimated to increase 2.05 percent annually.
