Mitsubishi Corporation has signed two contracts with Myanmar Railways to buy 246 new carriages for Yangon Circular Railway and the Yangon-Mandalay railway project

Mitsubishi Corporation has signed two contracts with Myanmar Railways to buy 246 new carriages for Yangon-Mandalay road section and Yangon circular road worth Japanese Yen 69 billion. 

The first contract is for 66 rail carriages that will be used in the Yangon Circular Railway project and the second is for 180 carriages for the Yangon-Mandalay railway project. The two contracts were signed on December 7, 2020. 

The Japanese government provides its assistance to Myanmar under the official development Assistance (ODA), including the upgrading of railway projects in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Communications. By using the Japanese components, the carriages will be assembled by Spain’s railway vehicle manufacturer CAF Group.

The carriages could run at the maximum speed of 60 kn/hr on Yangon circular railway and reduce the time for one circular route from the present 170 minutes to 110 minutes. The maximum speed of 620 km long Yangon-Mandalay route is expected at 100 km/hr and the route passes Nay Pyi Taw. The time taken will be decreased from 15 hours to 8 hours. The two projects are expected to be completed in 2023 according to JICA.
