Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism implements five community-based tourism (CBT) projects

The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism slated five community-based tourism (CBT) projects, according to deputy minister DrSaiKyaw Ohm.

He spoke at a forum on the development of community-based tourism Monday.

The project areas include the Pa-O Self-A dministered Zone in Shan State, Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Thantaunggyi in Kayin State, the Ayeyawady dolphin sanctuary in Mandalay Region and Demawso in Kayah State.

Myanmar’s first CBT was established in Myaing Township near Bagan and was well-received.

The deputy minister added that CBT projects are meant to provide local residents with job opportunities and alleviate poverty.

KhonHtunOo of the Community Environment Tourism Pa-O Region and ZweZawZaw Win of Fauna and Flora International talked about the projects in the Pa-O Self-Administered Zone and in Indawgyi Lake.

Action Aid’s DrSital Kumar explained the CBT project in Myaing Township.

Saw Bonthar of Peace Nexus, Thant Zin of the World Conservation Society and Alice LonnSwe of the International Trade Centre explained the Thantaunggyi, Ayeyawady dolphin sanctuary and Demawso projects, respectively.

The five-year scheme for human resource development in the tourism sector is being implemented co-operatively with the Luxembourg Agency for Development Cooperation, according to DrSaiKyaw Ohm.
