There are about 3,800 four- and five-star hotels rooms in Yangon with occupancy rates falling by 5 per cent since this time last year, according to Colliers International.

The Melia Hotel was the most recent high-quality hotel to open when last year with more due soon. The Pan-Pacific Hotel, Lotte Hotel Yangon, Pullman Yangon and Sheraton Hotel are due to open this year. About 1,300 high-quality rooms will be added.

Occupancy rates of about 40 per cent are expected during the rainy season. Prices have fallen with the current average US$136, down from nearly US$200 per room in 2012. Increasing competition will probably continue to keep prices low.
