Over 4.5 million foreign tourists are expected to visit Myanmar in 2015, claimed the union minister for hotels and tourism.

“Foreign tourist arrivals into Myanmar are rising year on year. The ministry is also preparing the tourism master plan to ensure the long-term development of the sector,” U Htay Aung said.

The local tourism industry is preparing in accordance with the boom by increasing room capacity and refining services, said U Tin Tun Aung, secretary of the Union of Myanmar Tourism Association.

“There are many things to prepare for but we are trying our best to cover them. Now the industry is expanding the number of rooms and developing new hotels to meet the rise in demand,” he said.

Various trainings are being conducted in order to improve the capacity of service personnel and to expand the number of tourist guides, he added.

Mawlamyine, Loikaw and Inle lake, among other destinations, saw a significant increase in visitors last year and there are plans to develop new destinations as well as further promote existing ones, U Tin Tun Aung said. According to the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism, some three million foreign tourists visited Myanmar in 2014.
