Yangon Regional Government plans to implement an inland port project in Hlaing Tharyar Township to streamline transportation of goods using waterways

Yangon Regional Government is planning to implement an inland port in Hlaingtharyar Township to streamline transportation of goods using waterways.

The project is being planned near the Nge Pin Le industrial zone and A Le village in Hlaingtharyar Township, but the regional government has not mentioned a proposed completion date.

The project is called the ‘Ngwe Pin Le Integrated Logistics Zone & IWT Jetty Link Dry Port Project.’ Its market sounding was held on April 4, and was attended by businessmen in the transportation sector.

‘‘Waterway transport is the cheapest mode of transportation. However in Yangon land transportation is mainly used. Therefore, we are planning to implement water transportation as soon as we can,’’ Daw Ni Lar Kyaw, a regional minister for electricity, industry and transport, said.

Most of the ports are situated in the southern side of the city of Yangon while most of industrial zones, markets, and wholesale trading in west. It worsens traffic congestion as goods are required to be trucked through the city from one location to the other.

One thing Yangon has going for it is water. With the Yangon River in the south, the Bago River and Pazundaung Creek in the east, and the Pun Hlaing River and Twante Canal in the west, The Yangon Region is well suited for water transport.

Not having an access road for the lorries and trucks worsens the situation of traffic congestion in Yangon, so as first step, the region government, she said, allows the trucks and lorries to hit the road at night.
