Department of Urban and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction declared its commitment to implement four mega infrastructure projects in Yangon and Mandalay in 2018

The Department of Urban and Housing Development under the Ministry of Construction yesterday announced its commitment to implementing four mega infrastructure projects in Mandalay and Yangon regions.

In Mandalay, the MOC has shortlisted six companies, one of which will be selected as Master Developer of the New Mandalay Resort City, which will be developed in Pyin Oo Lwin.

The 9,893 acre project will be developed in three phases. Phase 1 will include an IT facility, convention centre, schools and a commercial zone comprising malls and banks.

Phase 2 will be divided into several zones for developing sectors such as industry and tourism. The third phase will comprise housing options, a golf course as well as hotel and even agriculture zones.

A Master Developer is expected to be selected by the end of this month. “This project will be developed in phases as it is huge project. We will discuss the timeline, additional investments and other details with the Master Developer,” Daw Moe Thida, deputy director at the Department of Urban and Housing Development, told The Myanmar Times.

Smart projects

In Yangon, a K250 billion Smart District has been earmarked for development at Dagone Seikkan township. The 1,100 acre location is 8 miles away from the Central Business District and an hour’s drive from the Hantharwaddy Airport, which is under construction in Bago.

Local property developer Shwe Taung Company has been selected for the project, which will include commercial developments as well as a slew of housing options adding up to a total of 13,000 units. Schools, parks and sports facilities will also be constructed.

At Nyaung Na Pin village, Hllegu township, the Korean Land and Housing Cooperation (LH) and Department of Urban and Housing Development will cooperate to construct a $110 million industrial zone. The zone will enable more investments from Korean companies in heavy industry and other labour intensive sectors.

The project between the two governments will see the Koreans hold a 60 percent stake in the industrial zone while the remaining stake will be held by Myanmar. Construction has already commenced and is expected to be complete in 2023.

The government will also partner with the local Alliance Start Group of Companies to build an Eco Green City in Hllegu township.

Development of the $2 billion project will commence this year and take up to ten years to complete.  Eco Green City will include low cost housing, a transportation terminal, government administration offices and shopping malls in the first phase.

Phase 2 will comprise an international standard hospital and school, hotel zone and public recreational spaces.
