Telenor Myanmar reaches Kayah State

Norwegian telecoms firm Telenor said it has launched its network in Loikaw in Kayah state as part of its network rollout throughout the country.

Telenor has launched with 13 sites in Kayah, with 10 in Loikaw. Kayah became the 12th region in Myanmar under Telenor’s coverage, joining Mandalay, Yangon, Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Ayeyarwaddy, Kayin, Mon, Kachin, Shan and Naypyitaw.

“We are still in a very early stage of our rollout in Kayah, but we assure customers that we will continue investing in both sites and fibre solutions to deliver a solid internet and voice coverage in the coming months,” chief executive officer Petter Furberg said.

“Over the past few months, we have steadily expanded our services to more towns and rural areas to ensure as many customers in Myanmar have access to affordable mobile services,” he added.

He said over the coming months Telenor will continue its expansion to more areas around the country.

“… we will also continue to invest in adding capacity and optimising quality in areas where we are already present. Over the past few months, we have embarked on a focused initiative to deploy a number of innovative, world-class solutions to our network in urban market centres,” Furberg said.

Nyein Thazin, a school teacher from Moebyae township in Kayah state, recently switched to Telenor from her previous service provider, the state-run operator MPT, following the launch. “I’m happy with Telenor’s service so far. The connection is good and the internet is cheaper and better than MPT. Many of my friends are also switching to Telenor hoping to get good access and internet connection,” she told Myanmar Business Today.

Telenor’s network now comprises more than 2,300 sites, covering about 50 percent of populated areas across Myanmar. The company is expected to rollout between 3,000 and 4,000 towers by end-2015.

Telenor’s network in Kayah/Loikaw will be launched on the back of more than 400 points-of-sale.

Ko Kyaw Zin Hein, owner of Nice Mobile, an authorised distributor of Telenor in Kayah state, said, “We have seen in other parts of the country how mobile services not only change the way people work and live, but have had a very positive effect on local businesses. I am confident this will be the same for Kayah too.”
