Bel-lin power plant will start distributing electricity into the national power grid in February 2019 to benefit local people

Bel-lin Power Plant, which was built by Powergen Kyaukse Company Limited, will start distributing electricity into the national power grid in February 2019.

The Ministry of Electricity and Powergen Kyaukse Company Limited signed a power purchase agreement on November 6 in Naypyidaw.

“As the plant will connect to national power grid, it will benefit local people as well as the rest of the country.’’said U Win Khiang, Union Minister of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

The plant is located in Sint Gaing Township, Kyaukse District in Mandalay Region, and developed by Powergen Kyaukse Company Limited, a partnership between a local and foreign company under Independent Power Producer (IPP) and Build Operate Own (BOO) program, in May 2018.

The project will generate 1,020 million kilowatt hours per year. To do so, it will uses 30 million cubic ft of gas per day from Shwe Offshore oil and gas project. U Win Khaing said that the project will be implement as quickly as possible in order to meet electricity demand.

The Ministry is working to develop the electricity sector to produce more electricity, to enhance the distribution system, and to sell electricity at cheaper prices with good, stable quality.

The country’s electricity consumption is around 4,500 megawatts, and yet it only produces 3,300 megawatts, so it clearly needs to produce more electricity to meet the demand. By 2020-2021, Myanmar will need an additional 3,000 megawatts, U Win Khaing said.
