Myanmar is planning to export 800 tons of honey to European Union member countries

Myanmar is planning to export 800 tons of honey to E.U. member countries as it received an offer from the E.U., according to Department of apiculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation.

“The E.U. did offer to buy our honey, but beekeeping farms, honey treatment facilities, exporters, as well as our ministry are just preparing so that our products meet their requirements. At the moment, what we have is an offer, but we cannot export yet. However, when we start, we will export around 800 tons. We are testing and preparing what we need to in order to meet their requirements in next two or three years,’’ U Aung Min, Director of the Department of Apiculture, said.

Myanmar is currently exporting honey to China, Thailand, Japan, Korea, India, and Canada. Some local companies are looking to expand their exports to the Vietnamese market. European countries including Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands have offered to buy honey from Myanmar, but we are waiting on approval.

The Director added, “They are now testing our honey samples at a lab in Germany in the same way they test our fishery products. If they inform us of the need to fix something, we will do that in order to meet the requirements. We have sent hundreds of samples to them since 2018.”

There are around 1,000 beekeeping farms and over 3,000 beekeepers. From 2002 to December 2018, there are 178,308 privately owned honeycombs, and 6,200 honeycombs owned by the Department of Apiculture [or, beekeeping, ed.]. During that period they produced approximately 2,118 tons of honey, and exported 605 tons through border gates, and another 586 tons by sea.
