Yangon Regional Government set the deadline for claims of resettlement and land compensation for Yangon sky train route project

Land for the Yangon Urban Mass Rapid Transit (YUMRT) route will have to be acquired and the Yangon regional government has set the deadline for claims of resettlement and other compensation as May 6, the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) announced earlier this week.

Any modifications, extensions and new construction done on land demarcated for acquisition after the deadline, will not be entitled to land compensation, resettlement and compassionate grants, the YCDC  stated.

“Work on the project is being planned in such a way as to minimise the impact to the areas along Parami road.  Only a partial area of land will be affected by the project. Land in plots or block won’t be acquired.  In Bangkok and Singapore, the tracks for mass-transit routes  are nearly in contact with neaby buildings,» said Mayangone MP U Yan Shin.

“The width required for the sky train route is between 20 to 21 metres so it will not require the acquisition of entire plots of land. Compensation or compassionate grants will also be given for the the land that has to be acquired for the project,” U Yan Shin said.

The cost of the Yangon Sky Trainp Project will be covered by overseas development assistance from the Japanese government, Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Ichiro Maruyama told The Myanmar Times.

The first phase of the project of about 18 kilometres from Hlaing Thar Yar Station to Parami Station across the Hlaing River will require a 29m wide stretch of land along Yangon-Pathein Road, 22m wide along Parami Road.

The Hlaing Thar Yar Station will be built on a 21.8 hectare site and will require the acquisition of 11m of land on both sides of the centre line of the track along the Yangon-Pathien road and Parami Road.

In accordance with norms for international financial organisations, a survey will be conducted in the project area by Japan International Cooperation Agency from now until June 30 to draw up environmental and social impact assessments for the project.

The project is part of Greater Yangon 2040 Master Plan.
