Local and foreign investors are expressed their interest in Thanlyin Industrial Zone project

Both local and foreign investors are showing interest in the planned Thanlyin industrial zone project. Tahmoenye Company and Shwe Paing Htike Company visited the Yangon Chief Minister to talk about investing in the 400-acre industrial zone.

“Local companies want to invest in the zone by partnering with a Chinese company. They visited and met the Yangon Regional Government to talk about their investment plans such as how much they will invest and when they will complete the project. Now, there are four local companies that want to invest in the zone,” said Naw Pann Thinzar Myo, the Regional Minister for the Karen Ethnics Affairs.

The regional government said it will implement the project in accordance with approval from the head of state and suggestions from experts. However, the location for the industrial zone is not yet chosen.

“We will inform local people that there are companies interested in the Thanlyin Industrial Zone. Now, some rich people are buying farmland, we need to remind local people not to sell their land because we want them to benefit from the industrial zone,” she added.

The regional government is planning to reach out to the local people to inform them about the progress of the industrial zones in the region.

There are 29 industrial zones in Yangon and the Yangon Regional parliament has approved the Htantabin Industrial Zone project and Hlegu Industrial Zone project.

When the Htantabin Industrial Zone is finished, it will have factories producing garments, shoes and LED screens. The Hlegu Industrial Zone on the other hand, will focus on household products and food.

Yangon has received $2 billion worth of foreign direct investment during this fiscal year, which represents 60 percent of the total FDIs in Myanmar.
