New Yangon-Naypyitaw rail route to be operated with newer air-conditioned trains this year :Myanma Railways

Tests have started to operate newer air-conditioned trains along the Yangon-Naypyitaw route, according to an announcement from the Transport Department of Myanma Railways (Lower Myanmar).

Myanma Railways said it aims to start using the air-conditioned carriages, which have been ordered from Japan, on the route this year.

“We are doing this for the convenience of our passengers. It is more comfortable to ride in air-conditioned trains, and these newer trains will also decrease travel time,” said U Khaing Win Aung, deputy manager of the Transport Department.

The price for tickets in air-conditioned trains will be close to the normal train ticket price, U Khaing Win Aung told Myanmar Business Today.

It takes nine hours to travel from Yangon to Naypyitaw with normal trains, and officials say it will only take about seven hours with these newer trains.

Test runs began late last month along the Yangon-Naypyitaw route.

In the first phase of this plan, five air-conditioned carriages have been ordered from Japan.

More trains will come depending on passenger numbers, Myanma Railways said.
