Sagaing Region will hold its first international in January, with the United Kingdom, China, Japan, India, Thailand and Vietnam participating in the event, a senior business association official said.

U Kyaw Kyaw Soe, chair for region Chambers of Commerce and Industry, there will be at least 90 booths during the fair.

“Sagaing district seems to be a city left behind by other cities in the region,” he said.  “The government implements some operations for economic growth in Monywa and Shwebo districts. But, there are still many things that need to be done in Sagaing, despite its closeness to Mandalay.”

He said the three day international event from January 10 to 12 aims to highlight the different opportunities for both local and foreign businessmen.

U Kyaw Kyaw Soe cited the good roads, the vast vacant and virgin lands, among others, are some of the attractions of Sagaing.

“Before the international fair, we will also hold a technology fair in cooperation with Phandeeyar,” he said. It aims to encourage the youths to focus on technology-related careers.

The Sagaing Region Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, is comprised of about 200 small- and medium-sized businesses.

The Sagaing District consists of Myaung, Myinmu, and Sagaing townships.

Under the British rule, the district offices were based in Sagaing city from 1888 to 1947, which is over 700 years now. But in January 1, 2000 the district offices were moved to Monywa, which resulted in the decline of businesses in Sagaing.

“We plan to hold a magnificent trade fair. We will also invite Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as well as the regional minister to the event,” U Kyaw Kyaw Soe said. – Translated
