More than 1.9 million broiler chicks permitted to import with 2 months in order to help meet the domestic needs

In a bid to help meet the domestic needs, more than 1.9 million broiler chicks have been allowed for import between 15 May and 15 July, according to Myanmar Livestock Federation (MLF). Following the prevention measures to contain the spread of coronavirus, 40 per cent of broiler poultry businesses halted due to the decreasing demand, dropping the production of broiler chicken and hiking the chicken price.
As a result of this, over 1.9 million broiler chicks have been given green lights for imports, to keep the price regular and help domestic poultry businesses back to normal. Some production enterprises of broiler chicks suspended the operations. When they return to new normal, they need broiler chicks for production. Therefore, the import of broiler chicks is granted. The government has allowed importing 920,000 broiler chicks between 15 May and 15 June and then, more import permits have been granted for 1 million chicks between 16 June and 15 July. It takes 45 days to raise chicks for meat. The production costs K3,000 per chick. —Aung Thura (Translated by Ei Myat Mon)
