Thai border trade is flowing regularly, according to NyuntAung, director general of the directorate of trade under the Ministry of Commerce.

Protests at the death sentence for two Myanmar migrants in the Koh Tao murder case have spread across the nation, leading to rumours that the flow of commodities would cease.

“Trade is being carried out regularly. These rumours do not harm regular trade,” said MyintKyaw at the Myawaddy border.

An officer from the Mawtaung border in Tanintharyi Region said commodities were flowing as usual and furniture and oil palm were mostly exported to Thailand.

Myanmar has trade agreements with India, Bangladesh, China and Laos and signed a deal with Thailand in 1996.

The trade volume with Thailand so far this financial year has exceeded US$800 million.
