Myanmar's Ministry of Commerce has no plan to draw the 2015-2019 National Export Strategy again under the new government

The Ministry of Commerce said they have no plan to draw the 2015-19 National Export Strategy plan again under the newly-elected government, which is expected to be sworn into power in March.

The National Export Strategy, a framework to ensure sustainable export-led growth for the country, has included a list of potential goods which the country wants to prioritise.

“The strategy is suitable for Myanmar’s economy,” said U Win Myint, director of Trade Promotion Department under the Ministry of Commerce.

“If the strategy doesn’t go well, we may need to evaluate it. However we don’t need to review the NES now. We will operate according to the current NES even under the new government,” he added.

“We don’t need to change the NES. We will implement till 2019,” said DawNaw Mu Takapaw, director of International Trade Promotion Division.

The National Export Strategy was approved by the union government in March 2015.

“Many agricultural products are included in the National Export Strategy. Local farmers are needed to upgrade their technologies. Financial institutions, trade organisations, freight transportation organisations will also need to cooperate with the government in order to implement the NES,” said U Win Myint.
