Myanmar Agriculture and General Development Public Limited (MAGDPL) plans to construct a jetty in Zone No.29 of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone for agricultural commodities trade, according to the company.

The jetty construction project will cover 220 square metres of the zone. The initial phase of sand filling for the three-year project has been completed, the company said.

“Instead of involving in the business ourselves, we plan to provide services for jetty-related business. Besides loading agricultural commodities at the jetty, we are expecting to build warehouses as well as provide services for customs tax as a one stop service. But as for charges, it is too early to tell,” U Nay Win Tun, MAGDPL manager, said.

The project budget is estimated at approximately $428 million and the company expects to recoup costs through jetty-run businesses depending on commodity items and quantity.

Myanmar Pules, Beans and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association formed the MAGDPL in 2012 with the vision of promoting domestic agricultural commodities. Now there are 116 shareholders, including association members and UMFCCI members.

The warehouses will be constructed along the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and an international commodity exchange centre will be opened in Yangon for local farmers to help them sell their products, MAGDPL said.
