Importers of heavy machinery such as tractors and bulldozers will soon be allowed to import brand new stock to showrooms throughout the country as part of a government plan to bolster construction.

The Ministry of Commerce announced last week that it would begin issuing import licences for the vehicles soon.

Local and joint venture companies are both eligible to open new machinery showrooms but ministry requirements say companies must have a minimum of K750 million deposited in a local bank account.

All showrooms must be a minimum of three acres with a minimum 5,000 square feet after-sales workshop.

To be eligible for import, the machines must not be more than three years old and those weighing more than 60 tons will require a special recommendation from the ministry.

Machines can be imported by land or sea but the ministry has said import licenses cannot be exchanged or sold to other traders. If machines aren't sold within three years, businesses have the option to ship them back to the country of origin or register them at the Road Transportation Administration Department.

Used machinery imports have been permitted since 2015.
