The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 4% this year (Central Statistical Organization-CSO)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 4 per cent this year, coming in at 132.4 per cent at the end of May, according to the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO).


It stated that food and beverage was at 144.3 per cent while other goods were at 115.6 per cent.


The report stated that Rakhine State, Kachin State and Tanintharyi Region showed the highest increase in CPI at nearly 10 per cent.


The report said inflation was highest in Rakhine at 12.2 per cent, followed by Kachin with 8.9 per cent and Shan with 8.1 per cent.


Inflation in January was 7 per cent, 6.9 per cent in February, 6.8 per cent in March and 6.4 per cent in April.


In November 2012, the CSO conducted a household income and consumption survey on almost 32,000 homes in 82 townships across the country.


Under the second five-year National Comprehensive Development Plan until 2021, the government will make efforts to reduce inflation rates based on fiscal, monetary, trade and foreign-currency control policies.

 

According to inflation calculated using 2006 as a base year, average annual inflation in the 2011-12 financial year was 2.8 per cent, 2.9 per cent in 2012-13, 5.7 per cent in 2013-14 and 5.9 per cent in 2014-15, according to the plan.

 

Now 2012 is used as a base year to calculate inflation. The average annual inflation is expected to reach 7.9 per cent this year, according to the plan.
